‘Illuminate’ may be considered a slight detour from the more guitar-forward, shoegaze and psychedelic sounds of the previous releases as he explores a very synth-laden (and absent of all 6 string guitar) and more soulful approach to the production of his third release. Still, the trademark themes and overtones of that dream-like atmosphere and somber, yet blissful narrative of heartbreak and heartache continue to find their place in Illuminate as those elements shaped the previous singles in the same way. The vintage keyboards and Linn drum machine used in the new single give reminiscence of the production of a mid-1980’s Prince ballad. Paired with a rolling baseline that could be compared to something you would hear on an album by The Cure around that same era, the root sound of Illuminate becomes established, but with a modern twist and very upfront, shimmering and breathy vocals. Lyrically, Curt returns to the exploration of deep emotion and confusion within love, but this time with an approach of a plea and an act of surrender. After the first chorus of Illuminate, a voice message is featured that was actually left for an intended recipient and recorded off of Curt’s phone when he realized that it would fit perfectly into the song and lyrical theme. Thus, again as in the previous singles, leaving the listener with very personal (yet universal) and vulnerable expression wrapped into this tune and tale.

Illuminate features backing vocals by Rocio Libertad Mendoza who is the lead vocalist for Los Angeles based, classic Mexican trios band ‘Tres Souls’. The two are also close friends and have been neighbors in the north east Los Angeles area for almost ten years.
